What is Turtle Lake Refuge?

Turtle is a non-profit organization which acts heavily like an ecosystem. Turtle’s main mission is to provide raw, organic, vegan food to Durango, while also initiating health in not just the community, but the soil. The farm is located by Falls Creek, where housed members and volunteers work at the farm to provide food for the cafe and the given community. Turtle partakes in regenerative farming, meaning that it engages in the flourishing of health in soil. This is extremely beneficial for nutritional value and also climate change. They do this by composting and encouraging the wild edibles that already grow, namely dandelions and more.

How Turtle interacts with the community is a thing of high praise. Turtle relies largely on volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. There are people I worked with doing community service and volunteer work, due to their college, a legal situation, for fun, and for just simply helping the ecosystem. As widely acknowledged, farming makes you happy. The benefits from working in soil with plants is extensive in all forms: physical, mental, and emotional. This provides an excellent outlet for those who volunteer. Turtle provides a safe and healthy space for all people, regardless of any discriminatory you can name.

What is LINK?

At Animas High, junior year is dedicated to gaining experience. One of the biggest facets of this is the LINK Internship, a mandatory event for all juniors. This is a three week long adventure where students go off somewhere into the world, local or otherwise, to gain unpaid professional experience in a field that interests them. This is done by interviewing people in this line of work, learning about career clusters (which is done throughout all years at AHS), and taking a big leap of faith, and working with a mentor and their business, to determine if they like this field or not. This year, each student had to complete 90 hours of internship.
