Bella Anam’s

         In this Unit, we learned about social-environmental injustice to discover our voices in creating justice between humans and our mother earth. We dove into a wide range of contents to explore the huge web of ecosocial injustice: from environmental racism & NIMBY to Colonialist impacts and social pollution. We read from works like Braiding Sweetgrass (Kimmerer) and Howard Zinn, and I’m proud to say: some college-grade statistical reports and essays on this injustice. We utilized this to deliver thoughtful speeches designed for public speaking.

          I deeply engaged with this unit for the deep understanding it gave me for our world as it stands today. I always thought as a child that climate change, for example, would naturally improve as I grew—because, well, don't we all notice the rock we’re floating on? And as I grew older, my disenchantment with the lack of progress hit me suddenly and hard. And now I see that it is all so much bigger and more intertwined than the simple facts of necessity of our planet. There’s a whole racist tapestry that is rooted in the facets of pollution we have created. This new knowledge ultimately inspired the rest of my work in humanities as a senior.
